Laura and her boyfriend, Joju, worked with WAVES in Lobitos, Peru for one month and we couldn’t be more happier with their stay. Whether it was planning class lessons, showing off their local Spanish dance moves, organizing community events, or playing games with the kids, the motivation these two showed was unbelievable! [Scroll down for English version]Ha pasado un mes desde que llegamos a Lobitos. Todavía recuerdo la llegada: cuarenta minutos en una combi (una furgoneta que se encarga de realizar los trayectos de Talara a Lobitos y viceversa), un calor realmente increíble y mucha mucha emoción. Joju ya había estado en Lobitos y por la tanto colaborando en una ONG, WAVES, pero para mi era la primera vez y estaba estusiasmada.
La experiencia ha sido fantástica, sobretodo porque los dos nos hemos podido centrar en una de las cosas que más nos gusta: enseñar.
Joju, un apasionado del surf y del deporte en general, ha podido trabajar durante tres semanas en el colegio de Lobitos dando clase de Educación Física a todos los cursos de Primaria, resultando una experiencia muy gratificante cargada de alta dosis de cariño y agradecimiento por parte de los niños. Además dos días a la semana con algunos de estos niños acudía al muelle para dar clases de natación en el mar. Siempre apoyando las actividades varias de la organización junto a otros voluntarios. El resto del tiempo ha disfrutado del surf, de la playa, el mar y los atardeceres cada día.
Y yo me he centrado en los alumnos de infantil, en el club de chicas que se organizan los domingos, el seguimiento del proyecto de fabricación y diseño de bolsos con material reciclado por adultos del pueblo de Lobitos y la preparación de eventos y “compartir” que se realizan por parte de Waves cada cierto tiempo.
La estancia ha sido fantástica, pues es una mezcla de todo: siempre hay algo que hacer todos los días, un sitio en el que poner tu grano de arena pero por otro lado también está el tiempo que tiene uno mismo para conocer más este genial pueblo y su gente y costumbres hasta sentirse un lobiteño más. Y es que la acogida por todos y cada uno de los miembros de la organización, así como de los más cercanos a ella ha sido realmente magnífica.
Está claro que se nos han quedado múltiples cosas por hacer, recomendar, ayudar, pero como siempre decimos nosotros…será mejor dejar algo pendiente. Así no hay excusa para no volver, sería un placer.
It’s been a month since we got to Lobitos. I still remember the arrival: forty minutes in a combi (a van that is responsible for making the routes from Talara to Lobitos and vice versa), incredible heat and a lot of excitement. Joju had already been in Lobitos, and therefore collaboraed with the NGO, WAVES, but for me it was the first time and I was excited.
The experience has been fantastic, especially since we both have been able to focus on one of the things we like most: to teach.
Joju, a passionate surfer and athlete in general, has been able to work for three weeks at the Lobitos school giving Physical Education to all Primary courses, resulting in a very rewarding experience loaded with a high dose of affection and thankfulness from the kids. In addition, he went two days a week with some of these children to the dock to give swim classes in the sea and supporting the various activities of the organization with other volunteers. The rest of the time Joju has enjoyed the surf, the beach, the sea and the sunsets every day.
I have focused on the children’s students, the girls club that are organized on Sundays, the follow-up of the project of manufacture and design of bags with recycled material by adults of the town of Lobitos, as well as the preparation of events from time to time.
The stay has been fantastic, because it is a mixture of everything: there is always something to do every day, a place to put your grain of sand, but on the other hand there is also the time that you have yourself to know more this great town and its people and customs until feeling like a true Lobiteño.
The welcome by each and every one of the members of the organization, as well as those closest to it, has been truly magnificent. It is clear that we have had many things to do, to recommend, to help, but as we always say … it is better to leave something pending. So there is no excuse not to return, it would be a pleasure.
