Dave Aabo and NYU Surf Club members. December 11, 2007 The NYU Surf Club hosted WAVES for Development at their meeting Monday night. This was WAVES for Development USA's first prentation at an event in the US. The Adventure Voluntourism opportunities with WAVES were of particular interest to the student members, some of whom traveled to Mexico last year for their spring break. Dave Aabo explained that WAVES' Adventure Vountourism program, starting in Peru in February of 2008, is one of the newest volunteer opportunities in Latin America and one of the only to combine surfing and volunteering. An X3 magazine from Peru was given out to an attendee who correctly stated the WAVES acronym: Water, Adventure, Vouluntourism, Education, and Sustainablity. WAVES stickers and flyers were given out to all participants.
Jean Pierre Sanguesa - Director of Step Forward Peru, Dave Aabo - Director of WAVES for Development, Arturo Woodman - President of IPD, Eduardo Caceres - President of FENTA, Brodie Carr - CEO of the ASP October, 31 2007 A ceremony was held at the Lobitos secondary school to celebrate the arrival of five donated surfboards. In attendance were representatives of WAVES for Development, Step Forward Peru, the Peruvian Sports Institue (IPD), the Peruvian Surfing Federation (FENTA), and the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP). Dave Aabo, representative of WAVES, said, "It is great to see the surfboards arrive in Lobitos, whose youth provided the inspiration for the project. WAVES looks forward to working with the community to make life better for it's citizens through surfing and sustainable development." October 2007 WAVES for Development Peru has been invited to participate in the the 2007 Mancora Peru Classic. This will be the sixth stop on the ASP Women's World Tour. Come check out the WAVES for Development information booth, where representatives from Peru and the US will be handing out stickers and information on our pilot program in February. August 2007 WAVES for Development is set to realize a Surf Education pilot project in the coastal community of Lobitos in norther Peru. The two-week program is scheduled for the end of February 2008. The decision to launch the pilot program in Lobitos was made based on the strong relationship WAVES has developed with the school and district government. Participating youth will have the opportunity learn to surf, recognize the importance of environmental conservation, and build their personal and social skills. The program will be facilitated by WAVES staff, local leaders, and international voluntourists. July 2007 Arturo Woodman and Eduardo Caceres met with representatives from WAVES to develop the first draft language of a 'convenio' agreement with the Ministry of Education, IPD (Instituto Peruano de Deporte), FENTA (Federacion National Deportiva de Tabla) and WAVES for Development Peru. The agreement will promote surfing as part of the physical education curriculum in select coastal community public schools. WAVES is committed to arranging volunteers to serve as life skills teachers. English classes will be one topic offered by volunteers. May 2007 Global Surf Industries believes "life is better when you surf". GSI has demonstrated their commitment to their belief through their generous donation of surfboards to WAVES for Development. The 400 boards arrived in Lima via GSI's Thai subsidiary Cobra International. Mark Kelly, head of the organization, says 'we look at it (the donation) as a catalyst for bigger and better things'. A partnership was formed with IPD (Instituto Peruano de Deporte) and FENTA (Federacion National Deportista de Tabla) in order to receive the donation into Peru duty free. The Ministry of Education, parent to IPD, was also integral in getting the boards out of customs. |
