For me, international development became a topic of interest over three years ago stemming from a surf trip to Morocco. One year on I decided to study development to degree level and found myself in the fortunate position of being able to volunteer for an NGO as a ‘work experience’ module in my final year of university.

After researching sports development projects online WAVES stood out as being unique –allowing volunteers to surf whilst helping the local community. However at the time of applying I was completely unsure on what I’d do after studying, and entering my final year of uni was becoming a daunting prospect!

Six weeks into my time here in Lobitos I can safely say I want to work in the development industry once I graduate. From surf classes with Sofia Mulanovich to building concrete floors, the breadth of experiences I’ve gained has been enormous – my only wish is that I could of stayed longer!

El Arte del Surf dia has been a highlight of my time; it was a great day for WAVES and the local community with a visit from Peruvian World champion Sofia Mulanovich and surf artist Eric Soderquist. The day included a children’s surf class in the morning followed by painting a mural in Bella Vista and finishing off with a BBQ at the WAVES office.  Everyone worked hard to make the day a success and there was a huge turn out from the local community, strengthening WAVES’ support from Lobitenos.

However, what has stood out the most for me has been seeing the benefits to those you are helping. Whether it be during English classes seeing the children’s eagerness to learn, assisting in surf class or helping with the fundraising campaign for soft top boards. It’s been great to see all three programme areas evolving and constantly developing with new ideas, even in the short time I have been here.
